Food Sovereignty and Empowerment with Joy Schelble

  • Community Garden La Pointe United States (map)

Joy Shelble from UW-Extension/Bad River Food Sovereignty will be sharing her perspectives on food sovereignty and empowerment.

A little more about Joy in her own words:

“I am a mother, a teacher, and a plant woman. I understand that I am living here because of a violent and disturbing past of colonization, systemic racism, and the attempted genocide of Anishinaabe people. I am dedicated to restoring human relationships with our plant relatives. I understand my responsibilities as a descendant of colonizers living on Anishinaabe land and have worked for 25 years in the realm of food justice. My relationships with Indigenous people in my community has furthered my understanding of the plants, the land, and a way of being that is more in harmony with Mother Earth and the values before and beyond capitalism. I have dedicated my life to fighting the oppression furthered through the agricultural industrial food complex. I serve the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to reconnect Anishinaabe youth to traditional foodways and further the restoration of vitality and health in Mashkiisiibii. I am employed by the Federally Recognized Tribal Extension Program and UW-Madison.”
