Plot Rental Information 2026
We welcome you to join the community garden! Renting a plot in the garden includes many benefits. Plot renters have access to the greenhouse space, on-site water and communal grow areas are available for planting. You will find plot sizes and prices below. The garden is a great way to meet with other gardeners and enjoy the camaraderie of growing fresh food together!
Plot rental is open for the upcoming 2026 season—and we welcome returning members and we would love to have new members join our growing community. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or planting your very first seed, there’s a place for you here.
This year, we’re expanding access in three simple ways so that everyone who wants to garden can do so:
🌱 1. Standard Plot Rentals
If you’re ready to jump in and rent your own plot, simply complete the Rental Request Form (scroll way down!). You can choose the plot size that fits your needs and start planning your garden for the season.
🌱 2. “Buy One – Give One” Memberships
If you’re able, consider doubling your impact by renting a second plot for someone who might not otherwise be able to afford one. It’s a meaningful way to support food security, community connection, and the next generation of gardeners.
How it works:
Rent One: Complete the Rental Request Form for your personal plot.
Give One: Submit the form a second time and write “donation plot” in the comments section.
If a donated plot is not claimed, the funds will support MICG’s general operations—including gardener wages, property rental, supplies, and community programming.
🌱 3. Reduced‑Fee or No‑Fee Plots
We believe cost should never be a barrier to gardening. If you would like a plot but need a reduced‑fee or no‑fee option, simply complete the Rental Request Form and write “fee‑assist plot” in the comments section. No explanation is required. Your request will be handled with care and confidentiality.
Payment Options
1. Preferred - Pay by Check (preferred):

We’re excited to welcome new gardeners, strengthen our community, and continue growing food, friendships, and shared purpose on Madeline Island. Thank you for helping make this garden a place where everyone can belong.
Garden Details: We have gardening tools available, some tomato cages and fencing, and a rototiller for use in the garden. We also have a broad fork for turning the soil manually. Plots are available for the season, and renters are responsible for seed and plant purchase, adding nutrients, watering, tilling, weeding, and clean-up. If you would like to keep the same plot area each season, please specify this when registering.
· Large plots: 12.5’ x 15’ $100 per season
· Mid-size plots: 6.5’ x 15’ $50 per season
· Small plot: 3.5’ x 15’ $30 per season
· Communal space: designated areas for all plot renters to grow cops requiring more space, such as squash and climbing crops. These areas are the responsibility of the plot renters to plan and maintain.
· Greenhouse: Includes space for Food Shelf items. During “pre-spring”, renters may use up to 5 feet of ground space and adjacent shelving for seed starting. This space is available on a first-come-first-serve basis, and will need to be cleared when the staff gardeners begin planting in the greenhouse.
· Sustainable gardens: We will continue to develop spaces for perennials, herbs, flowers, and indigenous plants for use in education and harvest. In 2025 we built two 2x10 raised herb beds along the garden side of the greenhouse. The produce will contribute to the food shelf and renters may also be allowed a share as production allows.
· Annual garlic beds: Plot renters plant and mulch in Fall, and share in the harvest in August. Cloves are saved each harvest for planting the next year
· Volunteer days: Part of our mission is to plant and harvest food for the Food Shelf at St. John’s Church. We hold volunteer days periodically to help with various jobs, and appreciate any contribution!
Your plot rental fee supports maintenance, equipment, staff, rent for the garden space, Food Shelf costs, and educational programs.
Rental fee assistance is available for anyone needing financial assistance to have a plot. We believe that everyone deserves access to gardening opportunities. All requests are confidential.
Site guidelines
· The garden space is leased and adjacent to a residence, so please be respectful of the owners’ privacy and observe the hours of 7 AM to 8 PM for garden work
· Parking is available to the right as you enter the driveway. Drive slowly when entering the driveway, which is separate from the house driveway, and located near to the barn, No vehicles are allowed past this point: use wheelbarrows to transport materials. (Heavy loads excepted if road is dry). Note that the designated parking space can be muddy and alternative parking is advised (pull straight in right in front of shed near entry or pull along side the drive, consider parking across the street at the Capser Trail lot).
· All renters, visitors and volunteers must sign a waiver form, located in the garden shed. Sign, date, and leave in the designated box before working in the garden. Returning renters who have previously signed a waiver need not repeat.
· No pets are permitted in the garden. Children must be supervised at all times
· There is a toilet available on site
Individual Plots
· We are an organic garden, so please use only organic practices and soil amendments. Do not use plastic, carpeting or hay as mulch. Straw and cardboard are acceptable.
· Identify your rows with stakes or a creative sign with your name
· Keep your plot weeded, and cut plants before they go to seed. Keep your plants contained to your growing area and don’t infringe on other plots
· Pathways must be kept clear for mowing
· All seasonal plots must be cleared by October 10th, unless there are special circumstances.
· There is a designated area for composting: but weeds that have seeded should be removed from the garden. Please take any trash with you.
PLEASE NOTE: Plots are available on a first come, first served basis, so register early!
