If you love eating hominy, growing corn, or are curious about the role this sacred plant has in the gardens here on the island, please join us for this exciting planting!
In less than a week the Giiwekii project (of Great Lakes Lifeways Institute and partners ) will be planting our first of two plots of Mandamin, or ancestral flint corn on Madeline Island! We are planting over a dozen varieties of 8-row flints in the Madeline Island Community Garden on June 5 & 6, 10-2pm.
A couple days after on June 8 & 9, 10-2pm we are planting a large crop of flints at Manitou Makoons Gitigaan (Formerly Marty’s Middle Road Farm).
Bring lunch, water, and your work wear! These events are open to the public, we welcome everyone to join!
Planting will be accompanied by ceremony, song, and use of traditional tools. If you have any questions please email giiwekii@greatlakeslifeways.org.
