2025 Part-Time Gardener Needed

Job Title: Gardener (1-2 Positions)
Location: Madeline Island Community Garden (Middle Road co-located on Gip M. and Lauren S. farm)
Season: 2025
Hourly Rate: $20/hour
About Us: The Madeline Island Community Garden grows crops for St. John’s Food Pantry and rents garden plots to island residents for their own personal gardening. Learn more about our mission at madelineislandcommunitygarden.org.
Job Description: We are seeking 1-2 gardeners for the 2025 season. Hours will fluctuate depending on the garden's needs, with more hours in Spring, early Summer, and Fall. During peak times, hours can be up to 10 hours per week.
Responsibilities:
Starting and nurturing seedlings for spring and greenhouse planting, in collaboration with the garden liaisons.
Rototilling and soil preparation for communal garden spaces in spring.
Helping to prepare greenhouse and food shelf garden spaces, providing planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting throughout the season.
Planting and maintaining perennial, herb, and flower gardens.
Performing maintenance jobs, including weed control through mowing and weed whacking, learning the pump system set-up and end-of-season service, and ensuring the rototiller is maintained.
Organizing and overseeing garden clean-up, garlic harvest, fall planting, and distribution.
Communicating with garden liaisons on weekly tasks and other jobs as needed.
Assisting plot members with the assignment/set-up of garden plots, communal areas, and greenhouse plots.
Working well with volunteers, garden members, and the public, and coordinating weekly volunteers with garden tasks.
Assisting with scheduled educational community events.
Estimated Schedule:
March/April: Start food shelf/greenhouse seedlings.
April/May: Plant cool-weather crops, prepare planting areas.
June-July-August: Maintain the garden, start greenhouse crops for Fall.
September/October: Harvest, clean-up, and maintenance.
Preference: Preference will be given to a year-round island resident or someone who is on the island from April to October.
