Assistant Gardener Position - $20.00 per hour
The Madeline Island Community Garden is seeking an assistant gardener for the 2026 growing season. Weekly hours will vary depending on seasonal needs, with the busiest period being June – August. The Assistant Gardener will work in collaboration with the Garden Manager and the Garden Board Members and will be responsible for the weekly tasks as assigned by the Garden Manager.
The Community Garden grows produce for St. John’s Food Pantry and maintains communal growing spaces, perennial beds, and greenhouse crops. Learn more about our mission at madelineislandcommunitygarden.org.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
· Planting & Crop Care - Plant, weed, water, and harvest crops· Fill water tanks· Assist with weed-whacking and mowing· Administrative – Record & submit month timecard. Provide input into the monthly garden reportSECONDARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES – as budget allows & approved by board
· Seed Starting & Greenhouse Support (including spring startup/fall shutdown)
· Start and nurture seedlings for spring planting and greenhouse production as needed
· Soil Preparation & Bed Setup
· Rototill and prepare soil in communal garden areas
· Support garlic harvest, fall planting
· Community Interaction - Work with volunteers, garden members, and the public
· Support events organized and managed by the board.
· Voluntarily assist with community awareness via Social Media engagement
· Maintain regular communications as needed with Garden Manager, and board and members as needed
Peak work/hours will be between June–August: (Estimated weekly hours during peak will vary between 5 and 10 hours)
